Born September 27, 1913 in Brighton, Joyce was educated in her hometown and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree at Queen's University. She married Clarence Lockwood, also of Brighton, in June of 1938. The couple lived in Montreal until 1973 when they returned to Brighton and made their home at Presqu'ile Point. Joyce's first love was people, and her greatest joy was visiting with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Clarence, and her devoted sister, Pat Thompson. She will be greatly missed by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Donna, and their children, Andrea and Craig, of Mississauga, her daughter, Pat Keil, of Winnipeg and her children, Linda, Susan and Jim, as well as her brother Bob Nesbitt and his wife, Jean, of Brighton. WORLD Cuba greets grandmoms as heroes GERARDO TENA Agence France-Presse HAVANA Thousands of flag ing Cubans gave Elian Gonzalez's grandmothers a hero's welcome yesterday, even though the two women returned here empty-handed after a nineday campaign in the United States urging the boy's return to his father. Elian's father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, and the rest of the boy's Cuban family were on hand to greet Raquel Rodriguez and Mariela Quintana at the airport. And thousands of Cubans lined streets near the airport, as the women sat in the back of a convertible, tearfully waving to well-wishers in the fierce international custody battle over the 6- year-old child. "Pioneers, students, young people, mothers, grandmothers, workers, housewives, revolutionaries" were invited to take to the streets, according to an official statement. The parade ended at a convention centre where the women were greeted by a "brief and simple" welcoming spectacle put on by about 1,600 schoolage children, President Fidel Castro and other government officials.
The president of the Cuban Council of Churches, Pablo Oden Marichal, who accompanied the women to the United States, also returned in the small charted plane that brought the women home. The grandmothers were returning after "brave and extraordinary work in the United States, overcoming great obstacles and transmitting a persuasive message to the U.S. people," said a government statement published on the front pages of all newspapers here yesterday. After days of arrangements and one failed effort to see Elian in Miami, Rodriguez and Quintana saw him for a few hours last Wednesday at the home of a Catholic nun.
